Throughout his teachings Jesus equates love with laying one’s life down. The way of the Kingdom is self-sacrifice for others. In the garden we see even Jesus asking for another way. He prayed, “If it is possible, take this cup from me.” And yet ultimately he surrendered to the will of God, that His life would serve as a payment for our sin. He served justice for us.
And he rose again, having conquered death. The way of self giving love leads us to resurrection power and abundant life. As you have laid down certain desires, urges, and habits this week, where are the places you see life springing up?
As we remember today the crucifixion of Christ, let’s mourn our sin and the things we are letting go of so that we can fully grasp the abundant life Jesus offers.
Scripture for Contemplation:
Art for Contemplation:
Soul of Christ, sanctify me,
Body of Christ, save me,
Blood of Christ, inebriate me;
Water from the side of Christ, wash me,
Passion of Christ, strengthen me,
O Good Jesus, hear me;
Within thy wounds hide me;
Suffer me not to be separated from thee;
From the malignant enemy defend me;
In the hour of my death call me,
And bid me come to thee,
That with the saints I may praise thee
Forever and ever.
